چکیده

J. Soria Department of Mechanical Engineering, Monash University, Clayton, Australia • Results are presented on (1) the shear layer vortices developing in the free shear layers located between the separation point and the first shed Strouhal vortex of a circular cylinder and (2) the longitudinal vortices developing in the braid region of the Strouhal vortices in the wake. Evidence based on flow visualization shows that the longitudinal vortices develop independently at low Reynolds numbers. An analysis is developed to show that the spanwise length scale of the longitudinal vortices in the separated shear layers and the longitudinal vortices in the Strouhal vortices are comparable near Re = 1000. At higher Reynolds number, with increasing Re, the spanwise scale of the former reduces faster than that of the latter.

Three-dimensional vortex structures in a cylinder wake

The three-dimensionality of the velocity field in the wake of a circular cylinder has excited considerable interest and debate over the past decade. Presented here are experimental results that characterize the underlying vorticity field of such wakes. Using particle image velocimetry (PIV), instantaneous velocity fields were measured and from these the vorticity of the longitudinal vortices ly...

Lagrangian structures and mixing in the wake of a streamwise oscillating cylinder

1 Lagrangian analysis is capable of revealing the underlying structure and complex phenomena in unsteady flows. We present Particle-Image Velocimetry measurements of the wake of a cylinder undergoing streamwise vortex-induced vibrations and calculate the Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponents (FTLE) in backward-and forward-time. The FTLE fields are compared to the phase-averaged vorticity fields for th...

Longitudinal vortex structures in a cylinder wake

Recently, flow visualizations by Wei and Smith,’ Williamson,’ Welsh et a1.,3 and Bays-Muchmore and Ahmed4 have shown that three-dimensional (3-D) vertical structures develop in the wake of a bluff body. The 3-D vertical structures were found to include pairs of counterrotating longitudinal vortices superimposed on the nominally two-dimensional (2-D) Kirmin vortex street as speculated by Grant’ ...

Heat Transfer in Separated Flow behind a Circular Cylinder for Reynolds Numbers from 120 to 30 000∗ (2nd Report, Unsteady and Three-Dimensional Characteristics)

This paper describes the unsteady and three-dimensional characteristics of heat transfer from a circular cylinder to the cross-flow of air for Reynolds numbers from 120 to 30 000. An infrared camera was used to measure the time-spatial characteristics of heat transfer on the cylinder surface, heated under a condition of constant heat flux. Fluctuating heat transfer was measured using a heat flu...

Role of shear layer instability in the transition of boundary layer on a bluff body

The boundary layer on a circular cylinder undergoes a transition to turbulence at, approximately, Re=2 x 105. This is accompanied with a significant reduction in drag. Using a stabilized finite element formulation, we have conducted two-dimensional computations for flow past a cylinder using a very fine mesh close to it. It has been shown by researchers earlier that the genesis and formation of...
